Guided tour of the Westruper Heide
Explore the Westruper Heide at its peak flowering season
Westruper Heath

The Westruper Heide stretches across open terrain in the immediate vicinity of the Haltern Reservoir. Bizarre juniper trees amidst the vast heathland offer a striking sight. Today, the Westruper Heide is a nature reserve and is home to numerous animal and plant species that have become rare. Following the guided tours, visitors have the opportunity to visit the ‘World’s Smallest Heath Museum’. This small but charming museum, housed in a heathland cottage, has been lovingly set up by the Hohe Mark e.V. nature park guides and, within a very small space, offers wonderful insights into the life and survival of people, animals and plants on the heath.

Ave Agrippina – Roman Days in Haltern am See
Equestrian displays at the Roman Days
LWL Roman Museum

"Hail Agrippina!" will be the chant at the 2026 Roman Days in Haltern when the granddaughter of Emperor Augustus arrives. At her side are her husband Germanicus, the celebrated general, and her uncle Tiberius. In a large pompa, a festive procession, they enter the Roman camp at Aliso and celebrate the emperor's birthday with spectacular equestrian games at the LWL Roman Museum. On 29 and 30 August, fans of Roman antiquity from all over Germany will get their money's worth in Haltern am See. There were almost 16,000 in the record year 2024. Tickets are now available online.

"We are delighted that Agrippina, Germanicus and Tiberius, members of the imperial family themselves, will be honouring us with a visit for the first time," explains museum director Dr Josef Mühlenbrock. "The Roman historian Cassius Dio reports on equestrian games that were performed by Tiberius and Germanicus in 11 AD in honour of Emperor Augustus in Germania on the right bank of the Rhine," Mühlenbrock continues. Even before the participation of the highest-ranking Tiberius and the crowd favourite Germanicus, the presence of Agrippina was probably the highlight of the festivities for many spectators.

Events and military demonstrations such as these provided an opportunity to visualise the army's loyalty to the ruler and to publicly stage the military strength of the empire. They were a mixture of military exercise, tournament and theatre performance. The riders wore costly helmets with colourful feathers and masks, breastplates and shields, which were less suitable for battle than for display. They were used to stage mythical heroes or figures of the gods.

Such games also had a strong religious character. They could be dedicated to a god or - as here - to the emperor, elevating Augustus to the rank of a divinely protected ruler.

A hands-on Roman experience

Of course, the legionaries set up their tents on site again: they march in full armour and demonstrate not only the turtle formation, but also the penetrating power of a ballista, a Roman cannon. Bakers, potters, builders, blacksmiths, slingers and Teutons also present their crafts and offer their wares. There will even be a Roman water organ player giving samples of his skills.

Visitors can immerse themselves in the world of the Romans 2,000 years ago with numerous hands-on activities: from stroking a real mule and taking selfies in Roman clothing to making jewellery.

Caribbean night
Rhythmic swings, rocking sounds and a tropical Caribbean feeling
Outdoor pool Sythen

The Caribbean Night at Sythen's outdoor pool is already legendary. A unique backdrop is the ideal setting for one of the biggest parties in the village of Sythen and the main act of the festivities in our voluntary and privately run swimming paradise to finance the operation of the pool. Sometimes rhythmic swings, sometimes rocking sounds, a tropical Caribbean feeling, cool drinks (handmade by the GinFizzies), tasty food from the barbecue, hot sand and cool people - these are the ingredients for a great party under the stars. If that's not enough, there's plenty of time to soak up the live music and the whole feeling late into the evening at the night swim.

Joscho Stephan Trio - King of Gypsy Swing, Kunsthalle Burkamp

Joscho Stephan Trio
King of Gypsy Swing with Sven Jungbeck and Volker Kamp
Burkamp Art Gallery

The Joscho Stephan Trio is one of the most exciting formations on the acoustic guitar scene. Characterised by the masterful guitar skills and rousing stage presence of band leader Joscho Stephan, the interplay with Sven Jungbeck on guitar and Volker Kamp on double bass creates a modern evolution of classic swing à la Django Reinhardt. The trio impresses with fantastic interpretations of classics of the genre and with excellent original compositions that integrate elements of Latin, classical, pop and rock. This creative mixture inspires a wide audience and the trio shows itself to be a musical visionary. The production "Paris-Berlin" was recorded as a direct-to-disc record at the legendary Hansa Studios in Berlin. In addition to this album, the trio has released several live albums documenting the energy of their joint concert performances. Joscho's successful YouTube channel with 40 million views to date finds its musical summary in the best-of album "Playlist", which contains exclusively recordings from this channel. The trio has already played numerous sold-out concerts in Germany and throughout Europe. The great musicians are planning a longer tour that will include both the USA and Australia. Bandleader Joscho Stephan has worked with artists such as Bireli Lagrène, Stochelo Rosenberg, Daniel Hope, Peter Kraus as well as guitarists Richard Smith and Rory Hoffman in the Transatlantic Guitar Trio. He was the only European guitarist to take part in the renowned "George Benson Camp", which also featured Al Di Meola, Steve Lukather and Tommy Emmanuel. Joscho Stephan also performed together with Frank Vignola and John Jorgenson at the legendary Birdland, New York, where they played a total of eight gigs - another highlight in his international career. Visitors to the concert will also be able to enjoy the diverse works in the current exhibition at the Kunsthalle Burkamp. Together with the music, a special dialogue between sound and image is created, making the visit an intense overall experience.

Wilderness hike "Daring to tread wild paths"
2-day hike through the Hohe Mark!
Uhlenhof

The walk takes you off the beaten track for two days through the varied woodlands of the Hohe Mark.  The walk starts at the Uhlenhof in Holtwick and takes you along narrow paths through beautiful beech, oak and birch woods, stopping to linger on the juniper heath and at particularly scenic spots. In the late afternoon, you’ll reach your overnight spot, set up camp and enjoy the evening by the campfire. After a hearty breakfast the next morning, you’ll hike back to the starting point via the highest point, the Waldbeerenberg, where the Hexenbuchen natural monument is also located. During the hike, there is plenty of time to open oneself up to the beauty of the landscape and experience nature with all the senses. Immerse yourself in the wilderness and discover your own vitality in the process. Short reflections and contemplative exercises designed to deepen the experience of nature support and guide participants along the way. The route is between 9 and 12 km long; the pace is leisurely with plenty of breaks. For the night’s accommodation, you can choose between sleeping under the open sky, under a tarp, in a tent or on a mattress in the house.
