Coal pile in the Haard
A new take on old craftsmanship
From May 1st, charcoal will once again be made in the traditional charcoal kiln in the Haard. For around two weeks, the old craft of charcoal burning is revived. This is how long it takes for the wood piled up in a pile to char. After the successful start last year, the Ruhr Regional Association (RVR) is organizing this rare spectacle in Haltern-Flaesheim. Charcoal burner Andre Verheyen from Ennepetal continues the traditional craft.
During the two weeks, Verheyen has to keep watch day and night and regulate the air supply. During this time, visitors can experience how the old trade from the 18th century demanded knowledge and skill from the charcoal burner, but also a meagre way of life. During the entire charring process, the charcoal burner lives close to the pile.
