Haltern reservoir
Lake Haltern was created artificially by damming the Stever and Mühlenbach rivers in 1930. Since then, it has been considerably enlarged by sanding. With an area of around 300 hectares and a reservoir capacity of 20 million m³, it ensures the water supply for over 1 million people as well as industry and commerce in the western Münsterland and northern Ruhr region.
It is 3 km long, 2 km wide and offers walkers wonderful lake views and impressive idyllic viewing and resting places along a 10 km circular route. In the summer months, visitors can also hirecanoes, pedal boats, canoes and rowing boats in good weather and marvel at a variety of sailing boats.
The lake cruises on the new passenger ship "Möwe", which has been cruising on the reservoir again since April 2023, are also very popular.
The new e-boat calls at four landing stages: City center (old Seestern), Seehof, Stadtmühlenbucht (north shore reservoir) and Hoher Niemen (east shore reservoir/youth hostel). A round trip by boat takes 1.5 hours. Tickets are available online, but also directly on the ship.
If you would like to have coffee or breakfast on the boat with a group, there are group offers for groups of 10 or more.
With the group offers, extra seating and reservations are made for the group.
The lake is a paradise for water sports enthusiasts as well as fun for young and old. The lakeside resort with its 800 m long natural sandy beach has beach chairs, children's playgrounds and many play and sports facilities such as beach volleyball and table tennis. The restaurant overlooking the lake offers delicacies large and small and is increasingly visited not only by bathers, but also by hikers and cyclists.
There are parking spaces for hikers near the reservoir at the Seestadthalle or along Hullerner Straße (behind the Jupp adventure beer garden).
Just two kilometers to the east is the smaller Hullerner reservoir, which was built in 1985. This is reserved for quiet recreation.
