Roman history and sights in Haltern am See
Haltern am See 2000 years ago: One of the Romans' most important military complexes is located on the banks of the River Lippe. The conquest of the entire region was planned and carried out from here. Up to 5000 Roman soldiers lived in the main camp alone. Its name: Aliso!
Today, the LWL Roman Museum is located on this exact spot! Directly behind it, the west gate and parts of the adjoining wood-earth wall with pointed ditches in front of it have been reconstructed. Exactly where the Roman legionnaires had built them 2000 years ago.
Under the motto "When the Romans got cheeky", a knowledgeable guide will lead you from find to find and explain the Roman advance into Germania on the right bank of the Rhine.
You will have lunch in the shadow of the Siebenteufelsturm tower in the center of the old town.
A walk along the Haltern reservoir and a lake cruise on the "Möwe" passenger boat will show you the natural face of the lakeside town, which is shaped by the water.
