Haltern am See 2000 years ago
Why did the Romans come to Haltern am See?
Haltern am See around the time of Christ's birth: one of the Romans' most important bases is located on the banks of the River Lippe. From here, the famous general Varus attempted to turn the Germanic region to the right of the Rhine into a Roman province. One of the three legions to perish in the Varus Battle in 9 AD, Legio XIX, was stationed here. The name of the camp: Aliso.
It has been over 125 years since archaeologists first dug into the ground in Haltern. With success! The Roman traces at Haltern are among the most important and best-researched military sites from the time of Emperor Augustus: several marching camps, a fortified main camp, a river port, ship houses and a Roman cemetery are home to spectacular finds, which have been on display in the LWL Roman Museum since 1993.
