History in the river - The Roman-Lippe Route
Water experience and Roman culture between Detmold and Xanten
The Lippe, the longest river in North Rhine-Westphalia, has its own long-distance cycle route along the river: the Roman Lippe Route! On the approx. 295 km long main route and the 184 km long loops, cycling enthusiasts can experience Roman culture and water adventures between Detmold and Xanten from the comfort of their saddle.
With the LWL Roman Museum in Haltern am See, the town is the ideal starting point for a start on the Roman-Lippe route, both downstream towards Xanten and upstream towards Detmold for the more demanding cyclist.
Impressions of the Römer-Lippe-Route
Roman culture and water experience
The Römer-Lippe-Route offers a varied framework for multi-day stage tours as well as for day trips on sections of the route or the themed loops.
In addition to the 295 km long main route, you can choose the route via the themed loops at twelve points. These lead to selected water experiences or provide information on sites of Roman culture. They are also particularly suitable for day trips along the route.
Although the route is well signposted in both directions, it is recommended to travel the entire route from east (Detmold) to west (Xanten).
The route runs mainly on separately guided and car-free paths.
Here we have put together a travel offer in the direction of Xanten, one of the most beautiful sections of the route - very idyllic and varied!
