Mobility and climate protection

Integrated climate protection and adaptation concept

In 2012, the town of Haltern am See published its integrated climate protection and adaptation concept. It contains numerous measures for the municipal administration, businesses and citizens to protect the climate and adapt to the climate changes that have already been caused. The "mobility" field of action plays a major role in this. The aim here is to significantly reduce CO2 emissions caused by traffic by avoiding, shifting or improving (more efficient use of means of transport):

  • To avoid traffic, measures of an urban planning nature are often developed in the area of settlement and traffic planning, such as traffic-optimized urban development concepts that create shorter routes for the population. This also includes measures aimed at changing the mentality of the population and changing user behavior. These include motivational campaigns for cycling and the use of telephone/video conferences instead of real meetings or CO2-producing business trips.
  • The keyword " modal shift" refers to measures aimed at promoting environmentally friendly modes of transport: away from motorized private transport and towards climate-friendly modes of transport, i.e. local public transport, cycling, pedestrian and rail freight transport.
  • The use of modern technologies, such as the use of hybrid buses in local public transport or the use of fuel-efficient cars in everyday and commuter traffic, is part of the improvement, i.e. the more efficient use of means of transport; this also includes the use of car sharing.

A total of 12 proposed mobility measures are intended to make transportation more environmentally and climate-friendly. The integrated climate protection and adaptation concept of the town of Haltern am See can be viewed at www.haltern-am-see.de.

Climate protection campaigns and cycling

The bicycle is a suitable means of drawing attention to climate-friendly transportation options. For this reason, the topics of climate protection and cycling are also closely linked in Haltern am See.

CITY CYCLING

Since 2015, Haltern am See has been taking part in CITY CYCLING, the largest competition for climate protection and the promotion of cycling.

CITY CYCLING is about leaving the car at home and cycling as many kilometers as possible within three weeks - thus increasing cycling and reducing CO2 emissions at the same time. Numerous municipalities and districts throughout Germany and Europe are competing against each other in the campaign. More information and the opportunity to take part can be found on the website www.stadtradeln.de.

STADTRADELN always takes place in the district of Recklinghausen from the first Sunday in September.
