Bicycle-friendly city

Haltern am See has been a member of the Working Group of Pedestrian and Bicycle Friendly Cities, Municipalities and Districts in North Rhine-Westphalia (AGFS NRW) since 2006.

The program "Working Group of Bicycle-Friendly Cities and Municipalities in NRW" started as a model project on the basis of a circular decree issued by the Ministry of Urban Development, Housing and Transport on 01.07.1989. In 1993, the "Working Group of Pedestrian and Bicycle-Friendly Cities, Municipalities and Districts in North Rhine-Westphalia" emerged from this.

Designing a liveable, sustainable and vibrant city

The general aim of the AGFS is to design liveable, sustainable and vibrant cities. Cities with a high quality of life and movement are not only characterized by high accessibility and accessibility for all means of transport, but also have optimal conditions for local mobility, local supply and local recreation. This means that the group of non-motorized road users - cyclists and pedestrians - must be promoted in particular. The members of the working group also see themselves as model cities for sustainable, ecologically sensible and city-friendly mobility and support all measures that strengthen the city as a living space.

Being bicycle-friendly means constantly evolving

Since then, various projects and measures have been implemented to promote pedestrian and bicycle traffic. These include the creation and upgrading of path connections, such as the cycle promenade around the town center or the connecting axis between the town center and the reservoir ("The lake makes waves"), the signposting and maintenance of the cycle network including various tourist themed routes (e.g. H-routes, Römer-Lippe route) as well as public relations work (e.g. information on cycle and hiking paths in and around Haltern am See by the tourist information office, organization of the Haltern Saddle Festival).

However, a "pedestrian and bicycle-friendly city" is never finished with the implementation of projects or measures. The town of Haltern am See is therefore continuously working on improving its local mobility services.

Support from the Future Mobility Network NRW

In addition to the AGFS, Haltern am See has also been a member of the Zukunftsnetz Mobilität NRW since 2020. Here, too, the town receives support in the field of local mobility. However, the network also focuses on local public transport and alternative drive systems, for example, as the aim is to achieve sustainable and climate-neutral mobility overall. To ensure that the mobility turnaround in North Rhine-Westphalia succeeds, the Future Mobility Network NRW is focusing on establishing municipal mobility management and is also supporting Haltern am See in successfully implementing projects.
