Haltern am See 2000 years ago: One of the Romans' most important bases is located on the banks of the River Lippe. It was from here that the famous Roman general Varus attempted to conquer the area to the right of the Rhine. One of the legions that was to perish in the Varus Battle in 9 AD, Legio IXI, was stationed here. The name of the camp: Aliso!

Lake cruise and visit to Westruper Heide

Discover Haltern's idyllic lake landscape on a round trip with the "Möwe" passenger boat . Board at the Seehof jetty on the southern shore of the Haltern reservoir and cruise past the Vogelinsel, the Seebad and the Stadtmühlenbucht, where the sailing boat harbor is also located, for around 1.5 hours. You can book tickets online in advance or directly when boarding the boat.
After the boat trip, walk from the southern shore of the reservoir directly into the Westrup heath landscape. Experience this old cultural landscape on sandy paths, with fragrant juniper bushes and unique flora and fauna.
